Indeed the company's brand is strong and has built some appealing intangible asset, along with a cohesive franchisee system and highly scalable business model. Rather than pull my money out at the wrong time, as so many people did, I invested in specific trend-bucking, low-beta stocks -- O'Reilly (NASDAQ: ORLY  ) , Advance Auto Parts (NYSE: AAP  ) , and AutoZone (NYSE: AZO  ) . I did so while following Lynch's advice to "invest in what you know." To allow me to tell my story, let me briefly explain what the beta number is and how it works. Then I'll tell you why I picked those stocks and explain how you can do it next time.

Last month, Sears revealed its ninth straight quarterly loss amid deep discounting. The company was forced to raise $500 million earlier this year by spinning off Lands' End (LE).

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. -- Sears, sorely in need of cash, Sears is selling most of its stake in its Canadian unit to raise as much as $380 million. The sale of the majority of its 51 percent stake in Sears Canada to its own shareholders will give the retailer some breathing room as it heads into the crucial holiday season. The company board approved a rights offering of up to 40 million shares of Sears Canada. Chairman and CEO Edward Lampert plans to fully exercise his subscription rights. ESL Investments , of which Lampert is also chairman and CEO, will do the same. Sears will still hold about 12 million shares of Sears Canada, valued at about $113 million. The retailer, based in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, expects at least $168 million in proceeds from the rights offering in mid-to-late October, with the rest by early November. Sears has been exploring options for its limping Sears Canada operations. Sears Holdings (SHLD), which runs Kmart and its namesake stores, has faced mounting pressure from rivals like Walmart Stores (WMT), in what has proved to be a slow recovery from the recession. It also faces the continuing shift by consumers to online purchases from companies like Amazon.com. Lampert, a billionaire hedge fund investor, combined Sears and Kmart in 2005, about two years after he helped bring Kmart out from under bankruptcy protection. The proceeds from the rights offering, in combination with a $500 million dividend tied to the spinoff of Lands' End (LE), $165 million in proceeds from some real estate transactions and a $400 million short-term loan, will provide Sears Holdings with up to $1.45 billion in liquidity in fiscal 2014, according to Chief Financial Officer Rob Schriesheim. He said that the recent cash infusions will give Sears the financial flexibility to continue working on a turnaround. Sears will continue to evaluate its capita

Another decline in quarterly revenue came as no surprise when Sears Holdings (SHLD) reported first quarter results on Thursday morning. The retailer has been shedding revenue-bearing properties like Lands’ End (LE) in earnest for about three years now, while simultaneously axing operational stores; 80 more stores have been or will be closed in 2014.

The decline in capital can be traced to the financial crisis, changes in underwriting, and the disappearance of STOLI policies. The changes in underwriting have not been favorable for the industry and have resulted in longer life expectancies. Just ask T. Boone Pickens how his predetermined time of death worked out for his alma mater. 21st Services and AVS are the industry leaders and whenever they perform life expectancy (LE) revisions, the life settlement IRRs adjust accordingly. For example, in September 2008 21st Services revised their LE tables and the result was longer expected lives.

Advisors' Opinion:

Vipshop (VIPS) rovides branded products to consumers in China through flash sales on its vipshop.com Web site. This stock closed up 9.3% to $47.89 in Monday's trading session.

    Monday's Volume: 2.17 million

    Three-Month Average Volume: 645,972

    Volume % Change: 216%

From a technical perspective, VIPS soared sharply higher here right off some near-term support at $42.50 with heavy upside volume. This move pushed shares of VIPS into breakout territory, since the stock took out some near-term overhead resistance levels at $45 to $45.27 with high volume. Shares of VIPS are now quickly moving within range of triggering another big breakout trade. That trade will hit if VIPS manages to take out Monday's intraday high of $48.40 and then once it clears its all-time high at $50.43 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in VIPS as long as it's trending above $45 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 645,972 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then VIPS will set up to enter new all-time high territory above $50.43, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are $55 to $57.

Shares of Vipshop (NYSE: VIPS  ) tumbled 13% on Tuesday. It wasn't necessarily the legislative concerns that knocked the online clothing discounter down. Andy Wong/AP Alibaba (BABA) is the new belle of the dot-com ball in China. The e-commerce juggernaut pulled off a record initial public offering in September when it raised $25 billion on the way to becoming a public company. Analysts love Alibaba. They were able to initiate coverage on Wednesday, following the 40-day quiet period that follows an IPO's debut. Only one of its underwriters -- Goldman Sachs -- failed to tap it as a buy recommendation. It's easy to see the appeal. Alibaba helped 231 million active buyers place 11.3 billion orders totaling $248 billion in transactions last year, and it's just getting started. However, the stock, with its nearly $250 billion market cap, isn't cheap. Let's look at some Chinese dot-coms that have been trading longer and could be more compelling bargains. Baidu (BIDU) China's leading search engine posted another blowout quarter on Wednesday, just as analysts were gushing all over Alibaba. The company behind China's largest search engine saw revenue soar 52 percent over the prior year's third quarter. Earnings climbed just 27 percent, but that was twice as fast as analysts were expecting. Baidu is investing in low-margin online specialties including travel, video and mobile app storefronts, and that weighs on bottom-line growth. Baidu remains one of China's biggest winners. It went public nine years ago at a split-adjusted price of $2.70, and now it trades north of $200. Baidu fulfills roughly two-thirds of all queries, and it is rocking at a time when its profitability is still suppressed. 51job (JOBS) Matching employees to potential hires started out with old-school tech for 51job. It got its start by inserting weekly job listings in more than two dozen leading Chinese newspapers. Then the Internet came along, allowing 51job to convert its thick Rolodex and respected brand into a leading online recruiter. It's working: 51job is growing its revenue in the low double digits. It's trading at a reasonable 22 time

Restoration Hardware Holdings Inc. (NYSE: RH) has been a momentum trader’s dream and makes the Jefferies list. The company returned from private equity purgatory and had its IPO late in 2012, hitting the market at $24 and quickly rising to the mid-$30s. Then suddenly last June things took off. That coincided with a fantastic first-quarter earnings release, posting a 41% increase in comparable sales over the previous year. Recently the stock got caught up in the retail related sell-off and may offer investors an excellent entry point. The Jefferies price target is a whopping $88, and the consensus is at $76.33. The stock closed Thursday at just $58.64.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By James E. Brumley]

Truth be told, it's not clear if SK3 Group Inc. (OTCMKTS:SKTO) is best described when compared to a name like Cerner Corporation (NASDAQ:CERN), or to a Gentiva Health Services, Inc. (NASDAQ:GTIV). The company's got elements of both major industries being represented by CERN and GTIV (home health care, and information technology), with the addition of another budding industry thrown into the mix. One thing IS clear though... SKTO shares have decidedly reversed a nasty downtrend, and may now be one of the market's best small cap healthcare speculative trades.
