Top 5 Income Companies For 2015

Although business headlines still tout earnings numbers, many investors have moved past net earnings as a measure of a company's economic output. That's because earnings are very often less trustworthy than cash flow, since earnings are more open to manipulation based on dubious judgment calls.

Earnings' unreliability is one of the reasons Foolish investors often flip straight past the income statement to check the cash flow statement. In general, by taking a close look at the cash moving in and out of the business, you can better understand whether the last batch of earnings brought money into the company, or merely disguised a cash gusher with a pretty headline.

Calling all cash flows
When you are trying to buy the market's best stocks, it's worth checking up on your companies' free cash flow once a quarter or so, to see whether it bears any relationship to the net income in the headlines. That's what we do with this series. Today, we're checking in onEnergy (NYSE: NVE  ) , whose recent revenue and earnings are plotted below.

The track record of the annual list is equally as impressive. Since the inaugural edition in 2003, "top stocks" have beaten the market 7 out of 10 years (the jury is still out on the current year). That beats the performance of Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK) by one year during the same span.

Insurance companies are some of the best deals on the market right now, as many of them still trade below tangible book value. And considering that book value will rise more quickly as interest rates (and interest income) move higher in coming years, Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK) could afford to pay up to 1.25 times book value and still garner excellent long-term returns. Here's a quick list of insurers that fit the bill:

Advisors' Opinion:

This isn't going to be a well-received idea, given how bullish the stock appears to be at this time, but EDAP TMS S.A. (NASDAQ:EDAP) is a sell. Up 82% since the end of May, EDAP is ripe for a pullback, and may have reached the bearish pivot point as of today.

  • [By Bryan Murphy]

Last week, yours truly posed the unpopular (though largely ignored) premise that EDAP TMS S.A. (NASDAQ:EDAP) was poised to tumble. It wasn't anything personal, nor was it a judgment call on the merits of the company. It was simply a trading-based call, observing how the rally EDAP was enjoying at the time appeared to be running out of gas, and there was no floor to halt any pullback.
