Hot Cheap Stocks To Invest In Right Now

With a price-to-book ratio of 1, this stock featured buy in our model portfolios among the cheapest large banks in the world, suggests Briton Ryle of The Wealth Advisory.

Banco Santander (SAN) isn't just a European bank. In its most recent quarterly earnings report, Spain accounted for just 15% of profits. And the bank has only 20% of its assets in Spain.

The bank has extensive operations across the lucrative areas of Latin America, and emerging markets account for half of profits in the latest quarter.

By country, Brazil accounted for 26% of total profit, with Mexico providing 13% and Chile 5%. The US and UK each account for 12% of profits.

Santander made a couple acquisitions lately. It paid nearly $190 million to buy the majority stake of the consumer finance unit of the large department store and retailer, El Corte Ingles.

And most recently, it acquired a stake in the Bank of Shanghai that's worth $468 million. Seems to us, the bank can't be so bad off if it is making investments.

Popular Inc.(BPOP), Puerto Rico’s largest bank, said Wednesday that regulators approved its plan to repay the $935 million rescue package it received during the financial crisis. Popular was the U.S. government’s largest remaining crisis-era bailout after auto-lender Ally Financial Inc.(ALLY), which has paid back more than the $17.2 billion bailout it received during the financial crisis as a result of going public in April.

But the car called "Escort" that Ford (NYSE: F  ) revealed at the auto show in Shanghai on Saturday isn't some sexy high-tech dream car made for the show circuit. Instead, as you can see, it's a very simple-looking sedan.

One simple way of reducing your chances of developing a cardiovascular disease is by getting more preventative screenings. Based on a CDC report, nearly one-third of U.S. adults have high cholesterol and high blood pressure, making it all the more important that people take this preventative step. This sheds light on next-generation cholesterol-lowering medications like oft-highlighted Liptruzet which was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in May and could see a bump in sales if more people took this preventative step. Liptruzet, which combines the now generic LDL-fighting power of Pfizer's (NYSE: PFE  ) Lipitor, with the cholesterol absorption inhibiting prowess of Merck's (NYSE: MRK  ) Zetia, lowered LDL-cholesterol (the bad type) by 53% to 61% in patients -- a much bigger reduction than each drug delivered individually.

    A few Dow losers
Shares of both Merck (NYSE: MRK  ) and Pfizer (NYSE: PFE  ) fell by 1.25% and 1.11%, respectively, today. With neither company having yet announced first-quarter earnings (Merck is scheduled for May 1 and Pfizer for April 30), investors pounded the drug companies after Bristol-Myers Squibb reported that sales fell 27% in the first quarter this morning. Bristol-Myers did match analysts' earnings-per-share estimates at $0.41 per share, but it missed on revenue. Two of the company's big drugs, Plavix and Avapro, saw their shares fall 95% and 78% during the quarter because of generic competition. With Merck and Pfizer also fighting the patent cliff, this is probably one reason investors are selling today.

  • [By Dan Carroll]

Stocks are taking a beating today, and earnings season is to blame for at least one big pharma player's losses. After Pfizer's disappointing report yesterday, Merck (NYSE: MRK  ) shares have taken a similar dive following the company's own downbeat earnings data. Shares of the firm have fallen 3% to rank among the worst Dow laggards despite the company's announcement that it has approved a $15 billion share buyback plan. That wasn't enough to overcome sales falling 9% for the quarter, with even star diabetes drug Januvia seeing revenue fall 4%. Merck still has plenty going for it, but the company's reduced full-year outlook won't inspire investors.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Tyler Crowe and Aimee Duffy]

Over the past couple weeks Capstone Turbine (NASDAQ: CPST  ) shares have launched into orbit on the news that the company had secured several orders for its microturbines. But 40% in a month? On the surface, it seems a bit silly that a company could gain that much on a couple news stories about sales. For a company like Capstone, which has struggled with sales, this kind of news is exactly what shareholders were looking for.

  • [By Monica Gerson]

Capstone Turbine (NASDAQ: CPST) soared 14.29% to $2.24 in the pre-market trading after surging 7.10% on Monday.
