Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Matt DiLallo]

Not only do coal exports benefit coal producing states, but they are a big economic driver and job creator for states that export coal globally. Consider Virginia, which has a major coal export facility in Norfolk operated by the Dominion Terminal Associates. That entity, which is owned Alpha Natural Resources, Peabody (NYSE: BTU  ) , and Arch Coal (NYSE: ACI  ) , as well as others like it, help to contribute more than 19,000 jobs to the state as well as $2.5 billion in economic value. It's really a win-win situation, as coal producers have a market for their coal while the states gain high-paying jobs.

  • [By Aaron Levitt]

Already, the broad Market Vectors Coal ETF (KOL) is down about 21% year-to-date, while individual companies have fared much worst. Peabody Energy Corp. (BTU) hich is the largest U.S. producer — has fallen from more than $70 a share back in April 2011 to less than $19 a share today. Meanwhile, chief rival Arch Coal (ACI) has seen its stock price fall from $35 to less than $5 a share in the same time frame.

  • [By Rich Duprey]

Even so,coal stocks plummetedfollowing Obama's speech withPeabody Energy (NYSE: BTU  ) and Alpha Natural Resources (NYSE: ANR  ) dropping 8% andArch Coal (NYSE: ACI  ) down more than 6%. Using an end-run around Congress to implementoverreaching regulations through executive order are a worrisome possibility even if they'll have minimal impact on carbon emissions. Why? Because China doesn't care a whit about it and they'll continue burning coal regardless of presidential platitudes.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Gary Gordon]

On behalf of most of my clients in 2013, I chose to overweight tech and health care. However, I did so with areas that are traditionally less volatile. I continue to own Powershares Pharmaceuticals (PJP) and/or SPDR Select Healthcare (XLV). I’ve been a proponent of “old tech” with the attractive prices and dividends; First Trust NASDAQ Tech Dividend (TDIV) fits the bill. Additionally, I have remained faithful to iShares Small Cap Value (IJS) for small-cap exposure, rather than hop on the IWO express.

But, given the pharma industry’s migration towards this more potent class of medicines, MNTA stock has plenty working in its favor for the long haul.

    Orexigen Therapeutics (OREX)

Think Arena Pharmaceuticals (ARNA) and VIVUS (VVUS) used up all weight loss drug enthusiasm when the two companies won approval for Belviq and Qsymia, respectively, back in 2012?
