Hot Up And Coming Stocks To Own Right Now

They're some of the most overlooked income investments. I'm willing to bet that nine out of 10 investors don't even consider them when they're buying an income stock...

That's a shame because if you know what to look for, these securities can be some of the most powerful portfolio builders around.

I'm talking about investing in stocks with low dividend yields. I know, it might seem counterintuitive, but sometimes lower-yielding stocks can be better than their high-yield counterparts.

Don't believe me? Consider two stocks, one that pays 5% and another that yields 3%. It seems like a no-brainer to go with the stock that is yielding 5%.

However, if that low-yield stock can appreciate just 3% a year -- while maintaining its 3% yield -- it can outperform a static 5% yielding stock in just three year's time. In ten years, you can double your money with the low-yielding -- but growing -- security.

When it comes to Canadian oil sands, there has been one direction that many a company has followed: toward the exit. Tough economics, as well as a lack of sufficient takeaway capacity, has made oil sands production difficult for oil companies. But where so many other companies see peril, ExxonMobil (NYSE: XOM  ) and Schlumberger (NYSE: SLB  ) see opportunity. Exxon has held the course on its major Kearl oil sands project and expects it to be up and running in 2015. Also, Schlumberger has just acquired a Canadian company that provides geochemical and fluid analysis to oil sands producers.

Quick - what do CytRx Corporation (NASDAQ:CYTR) and Ignyta Inc. (NASDAQ:RXDX) have in common? Yes, they're both biotech stocks, but that's not the absolute best answer right now. The most meaningful common element between RXDX and CYTR right now is, each is on the verge of a big technical breakout and deserves a spot on your watchlist. Here's a closer look at each.

  • [By James Johnson]

CytRx Corporation's (NASDAQ: CYTR  ) oncology drug, aldoxorubicin, an improved version of the chemotherapeutic agent doxorubicin, recently received FDA approval to extend the dosing in a Phase 3 clinical trial. This trial is evaluating aldoxorubicin as a second-line treatment for soft-tissue sarcomas (STS). In April 2013, the FDA granted Special Protocol Assessment (SPA) to aldoxorubicin as a second-line treatment for STS with a maximum dosing of six cycles. The drug is given by a 30 minute IV infusion once every three weeks which is one cycle. The extension of the treatment cycle was based on aldoxorubicin's superior cardiac safety and efficacy profile compared to doxorubicin in prior studies. Aldoxorubicin was found to be safer than doxorubicin, a toxic drug associated with side effects such as cardiovascular events and heart damage in cancer patients. The extended dosing could allow CytRx to demonstrate even higher progression-free survival (PFS) efficacy results compared to the Phase 2b trial for advanced STS with this drug. The company plans to initiate the Phase 3 trial during the first quarter of 2014.

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Another under-$10 biotechnology player that's starting to trend within range of triggering a major breakout trade is CytRx (CYTR), which has an oncology pipeline that includes two programs in clinical development for cancer indications: aldoxorubicin and tamibarotene. This stock has been moving to the upside during the last three months, with shares up by 21%.

If you take a look at the chart for CytRx, you'll notice that this stock has been trending sideways inside of a consolidation chart pattern for the last two months, with shares moving between $2.27 on the downside and $2.68 on the upside. That consolidation pattern has occurred right above this stock's 50-day and 200-day moving averages. Shares of CYTR have now started to break out above some near-term overhead resistance at $2.49 a share. That move is quickly pushing CYTR within range of triggering an even bigger breakout trade above the upper-end of its recent sideways trading chart pattern.

Market players should now look for long-biased trades in CYTR if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $2.68 to $2.80 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that registers near or above its three-month average action of 154,838 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then CYTR will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $3.20 to $4 a share.

Traders can look to buy CYTR off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below its 200-day at $2.33 a share or below more support at $2.27 a share. One can also buy CYTR off strength once it clears those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Top 5 Media Companies For 2015

Source: Flickr.

There is a reason Warren Buffett has pushed Berkshire Hathaway's market capitalization to approximately $324 billion over the last couple of decades. In addition, Buffett has become one of the wealthiest men with a net worth estimate of around $66 billion, according to Forbes.

But why is it that despite the fairly simple-to-follow investment guidance of Buffett, many investors are far from achieving the success Warren Buffett has?

A lot of it has to do with how the serious job of researching and investing is portrayed in the media as well as how our culture focuses on short-term trading instead of accentuating patience and sound investing principles. While both Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger, vice chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, advocate long-term investing, our society glorifies making fast money, preferably without any material effort.

The Buffett route to investing, though, appears to be more promising. If you apply these five key principles of Warren Buffett to your investing, you are already way ahead of the pack and may be even on the road to some serious money.

'Interconnection' The better access that Netflix is getting from Comcast is known as "interconnection," a term referring to digital content's journey to an Internet service provider's gates. That path technically isn't covered by the current definition of Net neutrality, which refers to how service providers treat digital content once it's inside the gates. Comcast has promised to honor the previous rules governing Net neutrality through 2018. In a blog post last month, Hastings argued that future Net neutrality guidelines should be expanded to address interconnection issues, too. "Without strong Net neutrality, big ISPs can demand potentially escalating fees for the interconnection required to deliver high quality service," Hastings wrote. "The big ISPs can make these demands -- driving up costs and prices for everyone else -- because of their market position." Google's YouTube video site and many other websites were paying interconnection fees to Comcast before Netflix struck its own deal with the carrier. Even with the March improvements, Comcast's delivery of Netflix content lags behind several other major service providers. Cablevision (CVC), Cox, Suddenlink and Charter (CHTR) each delivered Netflix video at higher speeds than Comcast in March, according to Monday's breakdown. Netflix has interconnection deals with Cablevision, Cox and Suddenlink, although those arrangements don't require Netflix to pay fees.

China is set to ease the one child policy, something that could benefit Chinese stocks in general but be especially beneficial to insurance stocks like China Life Insurance Company Ltd (NYSE: LFC) and CNinsure Inc (NASDAQ: CISG) plus health care stocks like Mindray Medical International Ltd(NYSE: MR) and Concord Medical Services Hldg Ltd (NYSE: CCM). First, let be clear that China is NOT abolishing the one child policy as the changes will merelyallow married couples to have two children if one spouse is an only child plus it will be up to China 34 province-level administrations to revisetheir laws and put the new policy into effect. Moreover, China family-planning bureaucracy employs more than 500,000 full-time workers and six million part-time workers all the way down to the village level tocollect billions of dollars in fines and these bureaucrats have fought for years against policy changesmeaning they could throw up roadblocks if not placated. With that said, the insurance and health care sectors are two sectors with publicly Chinese stocks that look set totake advantage of the coming changes.

We initiated a small position in Wesco Aircraft Holdings (WAIR) during the quarter. Wesco is a distributor and supply chain manager to the commercial and military aerospace markets. The company should benefit from the multi-year commercial aerospace build-out that is underway. We expect this tailwind to provide visible growth through at least 2017. Wesco also has an opportunity to provide more services to large defense contractors as funding pressures force the industry to become more efficient. If the company can improve margins along the way, we think the resulting earnings growth could provide reasonable-to-good return potential for the stock. From Wallace Weitz (Trades, Portfolio)'s first quarter 2014 report. Also check out: Wallace Weitz Undervalued Stocks Wallace Weitz Top Growth Companies Wallace Weitz High Yield stocks, and Stocks that Wallace Weitz keeps buying Currently 0.00/512345

Advisors' Opinion:

Matula, who is currently a SVP for LiveDeal (LIVE), has a history of association with penny stock failures. An interesting angle is his tie to a lawyer in Las Vegas, Michael Balabon, who purports to have two separate practices, including a bankruptcy/divorce practice and an employment law practice who has acted as Registered Agent for many of these companies. I was unable to reach anyone at either office on several occasions. In any event, Balabon is the registered agent for PLPL. Coincidentally, he served in that role for NVLX as well as well as all of the former subsidiaries and partners the firm used (the new Medical Marijuana Sciences subsidiary too). Recall that the predecessor to PLPL was Diamond Ranch, and Balabon was the RA there as well. Matula has served in I.R. roles for perpetual failures like VelaTel Global (VELA.PK).

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Bryan Murphy]

It's certainly not as big as Berry Plastics Group Inc. (NYSE:BERY). It's not even as big as Tredegar Corporation (NYSE:TG). There's one big way AEP Industries (NASDAQ:AEPI) can certainly compete head-on with BERY and TG right now, however... as an investment opportunity. Thanks to the bullish bump AEPI gave us last week, a long-standing selloff has been revered, and there's a whole lot of ground to make up.
